The Licensee and Advanced Licensee training courses are for most licensees, approved managers and club secretaries, as you have greater responsibilities and obligations under the NSW liquor laws. The training helps to better prepare you for the challenges of operating a licensed business, while ensuring a vibrant and safe hospitality scene.
If you are a new licensee you will need to ensure you have completed an RSA course and obtained your RSA competency before you undertake your required licensee training.
If you are an existing licensee, your RSA competency will automatically renew on completion of your licensee training.
From 1 July 2024, former licensees with a licensee endorsement expiry date within the last 3 years will now be able to renew their Responsible Service of Alcohol (RSA) and Licensee Training (LT) endorsement by completing Licensee Training only. Once a former licensee completes a Licensee Training course, they will be required to attend a ServiceNSW centre in person to complete a new proof of identity, where their RSA endorsement will also be renewed.
Interstate workers with an appropriate RSA qualification looking to become licensees, approved managers or club secretaries in NSW can skip the NSW RSA Bridging course and simply complete Licensee training to gain both their NSW RSA and Licensee training competencies.

Completing Licensee training will automatically renew your existing RSA endorsement, however, it does not automatically renew your RCG competency.
In NSW, all competencies expire on the same date, calculated five years from the first competency gained. When you complete Licensee training your competency expiry period will reset. At this time you must renew your RCG competency if you are working with gaming activities. This ensures all your competencies are current and expire on the same date.
Individuals choosing to retain their RCG endorsement when completing LT must upload below one of the following RCG refresher certificates completed in the last 90 days:
Alternatively, those electing to surrender their RCG endorsement must present a completed Surrender RCG competency declaration form when enrolling for LT.
If you do not have any of the certificates above or a completed RCG Surrender form please contact us. We will request LGNSW send you a link to the Refresher Course. This will need to be completed and a copy of the certificate or surrender form will need to be uploaded before you can complete your enrolment. You can also choose to surrender the RCG endorsement using the RCG Surrender Form.
Interstate workers with an appropriate RSA qualification looking to become licensees, approved managers or club secretaries in NSW, or simply wishing to upskill, can skip the NSW RSA Bridging course and simply complete Licensee Training to gain both their NSW RSA and Licensee Training competencies. Appropriate interstate RSA qualifications include:
Once you have successfully completed and paid for your course it will take between 24 and 48 hours for you to receive your 'interim certificate'. This certificate will enable you to work serving or supplying alcohol for 90 days. During this time you must apply for your Competency Card or you won’t be able to work after the 90 days are expired.
You can apply for the Liquor and Gaming NSW Photo Competency Card at participating Service NSW outlets when you present your Interim Certificate and 100 points of identification.
You can get the digital version of the card as soon as you visit Service NSW to have your photo taken and proof-of-identity check. Visit www.service.nsw.gov.au and search 'Get started with digital licences' to learn more about the digital NSW competency card.
The LT / ALT courses are delivered face to face in a classroom and are a competency based minimum six (6) hour program (exclusive of breaks) with an Interim Certificate issued on successful completion of the course.
